There are still a lot of folks out there who owe more to the bank than their house would sell for. I talk to several each week who say they have been checking the market every six months or so to see if they have gained enough equity to be able to sell. 


Waiting and checking are 2 strategies a homeowner can take. This article over on Trulia describes a few more that are worthy of consideration. I think the take away is that you can always be more proactive to find a solution. At least by exhausting all your options you can know you've tried your best. It's worth checking out.
