In fact, a recent study conducted by Javelin Strategy & Research found that there were 12.6 million victims of identity fraud in 2012. The report went on to say that the total amount of fraud increased to $21 billion in 2012, an increase of nearly $3 billion from the 2011 study. While Social Security numbers ranked as the most damaging piece of personal information stolen, it’s important to be vigilant when it comes to any—and all—of your personal information.

-Birthdates and addresses may seem harmless, however, if this information ends up in the hands of experienced identity thieves, it can be valuable. Don’t accept friend requests from strangers and do your homework before downloading apps. 
-Mobile computing saves us all time, but if your network isn’t secure—and your device’s security isn’t up-to-date—it can cause major headaches. It’s always a good idea to refrain from accessing your bank information when using public Wi-Fi. 
-When it comes to combating fraud, time is of the essence. If you notice anything suspicious, report it right away. The quicker you act, the more likely you’ll be to reduce your losses.
